Gaetano D’Aquino Orvieto Classico 2012

This is the 3rd selection in my Trader Joe’s wine exploration.  If I keep up at this pace, I’m going to be walking the streets perpetually buzzed.  lol   But that would be irresponsible of me, so not to worry.  Although, I do take the subway or bus to most places I need to go – including work.  No, no!  Moderation is a good thing.  It means I’ll actually TASTE the wine when I drink it.  And as that is my goal …

I’ll stop joking around now and get to business.  Since the first two were reds, I thought I’d go with a white this time.

Winemaker:  Gaetano D’Aquino
Wine:  Orvieto Classico
Vintage:  2012
Appellation:  Orvieto, Italy DOC
Price:  $4.99 at Trader Joe’s

Notes:  This light white from the Orvieto region of Italy is … well, it’s light.  On the nose I found a mix of apple and citrus.  In the glass it’s a medium yellow.  Alcohol is 12%.  Acidity is decent but certainly not going to stand up to any spicy or highly flavored foods.  On the palate I found, as I said, a light flavor profile with a core of citrus and apple.  Citrus flavors are lemon and lime (lymon?).   There is also a chalkiness which adds some interest that you may or may not enjoy.  On the finish it had a quick lemongrass zip.  In addition, I thought I caught something floral, but I couldn’t pin it down because it was like a phantom – just on the edge of my perception but never really solidifying.  Maybe it was my imagination.  I want to say it was honeysuckle, but I’m just not sure.  If you decide to give this wine a try, maybe you’ll figure it out.

Important:  I am not a professional sommelier or wine connoisseur.  See “About” for the full disclaimer.

  1. The description at my TJ said their were notes of almond. Maybe that’s what you’re tasting? I thought it was okay, I’d prefer something a little crisper.
