Piccolo Fiore Bianco di Sicilia 2011

Here is a light white from the shelves of … Whole Foods.

Winemaker:  Piccolo Fiore
Wine:  Bianco di Sicilia
Varietal:  White Blend
Vintage:  2011
Appellation:  Sicilia IGT, Italy
Price:  $7.99 at Whole Foods

Notes:  This wine was a surprisingly vivid yellow in the glass, I’d almost say “daisy yellow.”  On the nose I caught fragrances of melon and lime.  On the palate it had a nice weight but was still light-bodied and lightly flavored.  The overall impression was green.    But that’s not all.  I also tasted white pear and melon with little hints of golden raisins.  Near the finish (particularly as it approaches room temperature) I found some toasty oak and a little butter.  [No, seriously, butter.]   The finale was a considerable helping of lime zest.  That’s where the “green” came from.  Once I got the zest, it didn’t dissipate from the palate easily, and that was somewhat detrimental to the other flavors.  This is a dry white at 13% alcohol, but there is still a surprising hint of sweetness to the wine.  For me this won’t be my summer sipper, but that lime zest could make it an interesting pair with seafood.

This white Sicilian blend is made by Gruppo Italiano Vini.  While I could find their website, I couldn’t find any specific information about this particular wine.  Once again, I’m very interested in knowing what grape varietals went into this selection and at what percentage.  If you have that info, please leave a comment.  Inquiring minds want to know!

  1. Thanks for this. Traveling to Sicily this fall and my wife only drinks white wine. We can get primarily red Sicilian wines here. Good to know what’s there and what it tastes like.

    • Awesome! I’m sure that trip will be a great experience. Aside from memories and photos, please bring back reports on what you find there as far as wines! No doubt there’s plenty of good stuff we can’t get.

  2. Woah! I am truly enjoying the template/theme of this web site. It’s easy, yet efficient. Lots of times it’s difficult to obtain that “perfect balance” between superb usability and look. I should say you have done an incredible job with this particular. In addition, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Internet explorer. Superb Blog!
