Yes, I’m a sucker for a sale.  And with the next show a few weeks away, I have the chance to do some wine tasting.

Vineyard:      Black Swan
Varietal:        Shiraz
Vintage:        2009
Appellation:  Southeastern Australia
Price:           $7.49

Notes:     Straightforward and easy to drink.  Plenty of nice cherry with pepper notes, especially near the finish.  Almost no tannins to speak of.  Very approachable for all palates.

Woodbridge Shiraz ’09

Here’s a pleasant California Shiraz to look for.

Vineyard:     Woodbridge
Varietal:       Shiraz
Vintage:        2009
Appellation: California
Price:          $16.50 per Magnum

Notes:     While I think of Shiraz as an Australian varietal, it’s popularity has propelled some U.S. winemakers to begin growing the grapes for our domestic market.  As such, I think this selection from Woodbridge is pretty decent.  For me it has a good core of blackberry flavor with an interesting raisin chaser.  Add to that some spice notes and moderate tannins.   All-in-all an OK experience.
